Language and CommunicationSkill Language skills and communication are of cardinal significance not only for the students of language and literature, but for all who are keen on building a prosperous career, as we live in a society that is more inter-connected than ever before and industries as well as service professionals are increasingly relying upon interpersonal communication. With all this in mind, our college has been invested in the task of educating the students about the need of the day, in terms of exposing them to the contemporary trends and systems of maintaining effective communication skills. This has been particularly challenging for an institutional as peripherally located as we are, since almost all of our students have had their primary and secondary education only in the vernacular. A foreign language like English, along with its syntax, grammar, intonation and pronounciation-related challenges has traditionally been a huge problem that our students have needed to overcome. The institution has, therefore, time and again organized awareness initiatives that have included special lectures on such issues. The Department of English and the Department of Bengali, consequently, have arranged five such special lectures in the span of five years (from 2016-17 to 2020-21) to educate the students about the importance of proper communication not only in English, but also in the vernacular. All these initiatives have been highly successful. |
