About

 Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science is one of the earliest departments of Sundarban Mahavidyalaya, established in 1965 at the time of the college’s inception. Initially, the college offered a Bachelor of Arts General Degree course in Political Science. In 1970, the department expanded its academic offerings with the introduction of the B.A. Honours course in Political Science.

Over the years, the department has evolved into a centre of academic excellence and has played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and professional lives of many women and men who have gone on to succeed in diverse fields. Advancing in tune with changing academic standards, the department currently follows the CBCS-2018 and CCF-2022 syllabus prescribed by the University of Calcutta. The curriculum includes core courses such as Political Theory, Comparative Politics and Government, Government and Politics in India, International Relations, Indian Political Thought, Western Political Thought, Political Sociology, and Public Administration. In addition, the syllabus incorporates various Skill Enhancement Courses and Discipline-Specific Elective Courses to broaden students’ academic and practical perspectives. Beyond classroom teaching, the department actively encourages student participation in co-curricular and academic activities. Students regularly take part in Youth Parliament Competitions, Quiz Contests, and Extempore events organised by the West Bengal Parliamentary Affairs Department, often securing prizes. The department also promotes participation in intra-college and inter-college seminars and debates.

To support teaching and research, the department maintains a mini departmental library for the benefit of both students and faculty members. The department is guided by a dedicated team of faculty members: Prof. Ruma Das (Head of the Department), Prof. Sanjay Biswas, Prof. Rajib Pramanik, Prof. Surajit Majumdar, Mrs. Anjali Mahapatra, and Mr. Animesh Gharami.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create an inclusive academic environment that enables students to explore political systems, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for meaningful careers in public service, administration, research, and civil society. Through our courses, students learn analytical tools and perspectives applicable to careers in government, policy analysis, journalism, non-profit work, civil services, and advanced academic research.

Our Vision

Our vision is to nurture socially conscious, critically engaged, and ethically responsible citizens who can contribute to local and global development. The department continues to expand course offerings and encourage student participation in seminars, debates, youth parliament and other academic enrichment activities.
